Wie es der Titel bereits andeutet, dreht sich in The Fosters alles um die Familie Foster. Zu dieser gehören in erster Linie die Polizistin Stef (Teri Polo) und Lena (Sherri Saum), eine stellvertretende Schulleiterin. Beide leben mit ihrem biologischen Sohn Brandon (David Lambert) sowie ihren zwei Adoptivkindern, namentlich Jesus (Jake T. Austin) und Mariana (Cierra Ramirez), zusammen in einem Haus in der idyllischen Vorstadt.

Stef und Lena entscheiden sich dazu, die Teenagerin Callie (Maia Mitchell) und ihren Bruder Jude (Hayden Byerly) ebenfalls bei sich aufzunehmen. Diese haben lange Zeit bei unterschiedlichen Pflegeeltern verbracht. Allerdings gab es immer wieder Probleme, die dazu geführt haben, dass Callie und ihr Bruder die Familie wechseln mussten. Stef und Lena stellen sich jedoch der Herausforderung – mit allen Problemen, die damit einhergehen.

The Fosters - Staffel 3 greift die offenen Erzählstränge der vorherigen Runde auf und erzählt weiter aus dem Leben der Foster-Familie.
