Shevek, un físico brillante, originario de Anarres, un planeta aislado y «anarquista», decide emprender un insólito viaje al planeta madre Urras, en el que impera un extraño sistema llamado el «propietariado». Shevek cree por encima de todo que los muros del odio, la desconfianza y las ideologías, que separan su planeta del resto del universo civilizado, deben ser derribados.

En este contexto la autora explora algunos de los problemas de nuestro tiempo: la posición de la mujer en la estructura social, la complejidad de las relaciones humanas, los méritos y las promesas de las ideologías, y las perspectivas del idealismo político en el mundo actual.

Sui dei fronti del muro, due pianeti gemelli, Urras e Anarres, illuminati da uno stesso sole ma divisi da una barriera ideologica antica di secoli. Urras è fittamente popolato, tecnologicamente avanzato, ricco, florido, retto da un'economia liberista. Da qui sono partiti nella notte dei tempi i seguaci di Odo che hanno colonizzato l'arido Anarres, fondandovi una comunità anarchico-collettivista che non conosce concetti come proprietà, governo, autorità. In questa società apparentemente perfetta nasce Shevek, genio della fisica alle prese con un'innovativa teoria del tempo, un vero "cittadino del cosmo" che dedicherà la vita ad abbattere il muro che separa da sempre i pianeti gemelli. Un'ambigua utopia, come recita il sottotitolo originale del romanzo, "I reietti dell'altro pianeta" è una narrazione che, fingendo di parlare del futuro, racconta il mondo di oggi.

Et Urras qui a, pour les habitants d'Anarres, conservé la réputation d'un enfer, en proie à la tyrannie, à la corruption et à la violence. Shevek, physicien hors normes, a conscience que l'isolement d'Anarres condamne son monde à la sclérose. Et, fort de son invention, l'ansible, qui permettra une communication instantanée entre tous les peuples de l'Ekumène, il choisit de s'exiler sur Urras en espérant y trouver une solution.

Nachdem auf Urras ein Anarchistenaufstand niedergeschlagen wurde, erlaubte man den Überlebenden, auf die Nachbarwelt Anarres auszuwandern, einem unwirtlichen Wüstenplaneten, wo sie nach ihren anarchistischen Prinzipien leben können - soweit überhaupt an ein Überleben zu denken ist.

Auf Anarres wird Shevek geboren, ein geniale Physiker, dessen Erfindung die Raumfahrt revolutionieren könnte. Shevek folgt dem verführerischen Ruf nach Urras, auch wenn er fortan in seiner Heimat als Verräter gilt.
