A massive gas explosion in modern-day Tokyo throws 17-year-old Suzuko back in time — 500 years into the past and into a death-strewn battlefield. 为了避免战争，各国决定以一场高达擂台赛(Gundam Fight，高达武斗)来决定各殖民星国对地球的统治权。比赛每四年一度，以地球为擂台，每个国家（殖民星）派出一位代表参赛，一对一以高达对战，直至只有一名胜利者。胜利者所属国家可擭得各殖民星国及地球管理权四年，直至另一个国家在下一次高达对决获胜。
而活在地球上的居民，便要忍受在各国代表在对战时所造成的破坏。
故事发生在未来世纪六十年开始，当时正开始第十三届高达擂台赛。故事的主角，来自新日本的code error!，为了追寻盗去以DG细胞三大理论，自我增殖、自我再生、自我进化设计出来的code error!(Devil Gundam)的兄长，决定参加这一次的高达对决，故事就此展开。

《百兽王》是80年代日本一套动画片，美国人曾把其与另一部日本动画片《机甲战舰》剪辑成一部动画片，并被我国在90年代早期引进，名叫《战神金刚》。
《百兽王》的主人公是五个飞行员，他们分别驾驶黑、赤、青、黄、绿五头机器狮，五狮合体后能成为巨大机器人“百兽王”，在法拉公主的带领下，英雄们展开了对邪恶鲁勒王国的反击。和《变形金刚》一样，这套动画片也有庞大的玩具、图书产品系列，同样是很多人童年珍藏的一段回忆。
