马缔光也（樱井孝宏 配音）是一位性格非常内向的年轻人，总是无法很好的通过语言来传达自己的想法。可是这样的他偏偏进入了公司的第1营业部，每天的工作都让光也感到压力非常巨大。一天，光也意外的在大街上遇见了名为西冈正志（神谷浩史 配音）的男子，这个看似轻浮又油嘴滑舌的男人，竟然是辞典编辑部的一员。
正志在光也的身上发现了校编辞典的天赋，于是邀请他加入编辑部，开始了对于辞典《大渡海》的校编，光也就此结识了对文字爱得深沉的荒木公平（金尾哲夫 配音）、将自己的一生都投注到了辞海中去的松本朋佑（麦人 配音）以及性格非常努力务实的佐佐木薰（榊原良子 配音）。

The publication of a new dictionary titled The Great Passage progresses. Mitsuya Majime, originally from publisher Genbu Shobo's sales department, has been recruited by Kouhei Araki, a veteran editor of the dictionary department who is looking to retire soon. The dictionary department is known internally as the "money-eating insect," but Mitsuya uses his perseverance and attachment to the words in order to become a great editor. Mitsuya, who has poor social skills, finds himself working with another man named Masashi Nishioka, who is able to express himself better.

吉恩突击小队作战失败后，小队唯一幸存者巴尼接到了立即撤离SIDE6的指示。因为吉恩军没有机会再组织力量破坏高达，于是他们打算圣诞夜之前，用核弹摧毁整个宇宙殖民地。巴尼得知消息后，要求阿鲁立即通知家人与克丽丝尽早离开殖民地，但遭到阿鲁的反对。阿鲁希望自己心中的优秀驾驶员巴尼，能击溃阿历克斯挽救殖民地的命运，于是巴尼只得一个独自离开。
警方无法相信阿鲁的报警，置之不理。同时，吉恩军搭载核弹头的攻击舰已驶离母舰。阿鲁面对朋友与家人几欲绝望，此刻在机场，巴尼正犹豫不决，最终，他下定决心，为了阿鲁与心爱的克丽丝，以及殖民地的人们，向阿历克斯发出最后的挑战。在阿鲁的协助下，他修复了初次袭击SIDE6时被击落的扎克，用唯一的武器--能量斧对NT-1发起了攻击。与此同时，阿鲁从父亲的口中得知了吉恩军将于数日后签定终战协议，他飞奔着跑向巴尼战斗的地方，但在他面前支离破碎的NT-1的光束剑，已刺穿了扎克的座舱。而救护人员从NT-1的座舱中抢救出的联邦驾驶员那一头秀丽的红发，更使阿鲁呆然……

故事舞台是在机动战士高达中的一年战争终结后七年。战争结束后一部份吉恩公国军事势力并未降伏继续在各地与地球联邦军发生军事冲突，因此地球联邦军内部强力主张追杀吉恩残余份子的激进排他势力泰坦斯（Titans）结成。由于泰坦斯对宇宙住民的强硬血腥镇压的手段，反势力奥干A.E.U.G.(台湾翻译为奥干，港译为奥古)结成。故事的开始于宇宙世纪0087年（U.C. 0087），前半主要围绕奥干和泰坦斯两派系的对抗，中段吉恩残余份子上阿克西斯(港译为阿古捷斯)登场，与奥干、泰坦斯角力周周旋，展开激战。
