在犯罪手法越来越精进的今日，对於刑警办案的技巧、鑑识员分析的技术要求相对性提高。为了因应科学的办案精神，日本各县内警署都设有科学搜查研究所，简称为「科搜研」。「科搜研」的业务内容不但包括毛髮、血液、声纹、DNA的鑑定，甚至测谎、颜面恢复等工作。虽然他们不是站在逮捕犯人的第一线上，但却是帮助釐清真相、寻找兇手的重要人物。
本剧藉由活跃於科搜研内，性格独特的麻辣女法医-真理子的办案过程，让大家能够深入一窥科搜研的神秘世界。
主角真理子是京都府警‧科学搜查研究所的法医研究员。在工作上拥有丰富的专业知识，对於犯罪事件也有异於常人的敏锐度，因此常能顺利破解奇案。不过在私生活方面，却是一位离了婚的单身女子；由於固执骄傲及易於动怒的性格，让她与同事间衝突不断。

そんな折、警察から佳男に「佳彦殺しの犯人が捕まった」と電話が入った。美津子と二人で警察署を訪ねると警察官から、別件で逮捕された鈴木という男を取り調べるなかで佳彦の事件が浮上したと説明される。鈴木は佳彦殺しを否認しているが佳彦の爪に残っていた血痕と皮膚のかけらがDNA鑑定で鈴木のものと一致したのだという。取材陣が殺到し、インタビューに答えるが佳男夫婦はいまひとつ実感がわかない。再び警察署に呼び出された佳男と美津子は意外な事実を知る。鈴木は相変わらず殺しは認めようとしなかったが佳彦から現金三千円と高価な腕時計を脅し取ったことを認めたのだ。そんな腕時計を買ってやった覚えのない佳彦は怪訝に思う。さらに鈴木は佳彦が書店で万引きしているところを目撃したと供述したという。佳彦は激怒した。「警察はそんなことを信じるのか」と興奮して詰め寄る佳男の様子は、傍目にも尋常ではなかった…。
