江户时代，同在锦文屋工作的荣二（藤原龙也 饰）和左武（妻夫木聪 饰）从小是一对好朋友。某天，主人丢失名贵绸缎，继而在荣二的口袋里搜出赃物。被诬陷的荣二遭到毒打，随后流放至荒凉的石川岛做苦役。
左武思念好友，经常利用休息日坐船去小岛探望荣二，却也一度遭到好友的怀疑。同在锦文的侍女牧江（吹石一惠 饰）和与两个男孩一起长大的舞子（田畑智子 饰）皆心仪荣二，并一心等待他的归来。而深陷囹圄的荣二遭受了无数的苦难，他从未放弃追寻真相的念头……

本作是去年播出的『信长之棺』的完结篇，由加藤广所著的『明智左马助之恋』的改编SP，原作是围绕织田信长遗骸所展开的三部作『秀吉之枷』、『信长之棺』的第三部作品。
这是以日本历史上最大的谜团之一【本能寺之变】的直接目击者明智一族的角度所叙述的故事。

相貌英俊的御手洗洁（玉木宏 饰）拥有天才般的智商，他既是一名脑科学家，同时还兼任侦探工作。这一日，御手洗从作家朋友石冈和己（堂本光一 饰）那里听到一个颇为离奇的故事。话说某个瓢泼大雨的夜晚，穿着白色连衣裙的女子拎着红色雨伞在雨中行走，她来到十字路口，却并未按照信号灯的指示过马路。之后女子将雨伞放在马路中央，任由过往的车辆将伞轧断。御手洗迅速判断在女子出没的附近场所发生了大量流血的杀人事件，为了证明自己的判断，他连夜报警。次日一早，御手洗的推理得到验证。然而出乎意料的是，拥有最大嫌疑的白衣女子的尸体不久也被人发现……
本片根据岛田庄司的原作《傘を折る女》改编。

The 47th NHK Taiga Drama is a life story of Princess Atsu, who was born in Kagoshima Prefecture, then called Satsuma, and became the wife of Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. She accedes to the highest rank in Ooku, the inner palace of the Edo castle where women related to the reigning shogun resided. Iesada dies soon after their marriage and Atsuhime assumes the name Tenshoin at the age of 23. She exerts herself for the Tokugawa clan and for the nation during the upheaval in the Meiji Restoration, headed by those from Satsuma.
