Wataru, a boy in grade four, gets blown into a world in another dimension, Shinbukai, where he is told he is the hero of this world. He becomes able to summon Ryujinmaru, a robot-like partner, and he helps save the people of the world from an emerging evil power.

Mashin Hero Wataru is a comedy/adventure Super Robot multimedia franchise originally consisting of 45 episode anime series created by Sunrise first aired on April 15, 1988. Sunrise credited "Hajime Yatate" for the storyline and Shuji Iuchi directed the series. The series employs a kinetic visual gag style, often employing characters running with their feet over their shoulders derived from Sunrise's previous Super Robot anime series Choriki Robo Galatt.

He heads for the Soukaizan, invaded by the Donarukami family from the dark world. Wataru enters the Soukaizan with Himiko and Shibaraku. Kain Blueriver est un mercenaire : il accepte des missions et les mène à bien. Accompagné de Canary, l'hologramme de l'ordinateur central de son vaisseau, il écume l'univers pour rechercher l'amusement, le frisson et l'argent (ce en quoi il est très semblable à une certaine jeune sorcière Lina Inverse de Slayers...). Il passe donc des jours heureux jusqu'à l'arrivée de la jeune Millenium Nocturne, Millie pour les intimes, qui va chambouler sa vie. De cette rencontre naîtra des sentiments amoureux.

Réalisant missions sur missions, nos trois jeunes gens (Canary peut prendre en effet une forme solide, a des sentiments et est doté d'un caractère très marqué) vont affronter la plus forte mafia de l'univers : le Nightmare dirigé par le puissant StarGazer (PDG de l'entreprise du même nom). Plutôt sûr d'eux grâce à l'épée unique de Kain, la psychoblade alimentée par l'esprit du jeune homme, et surtout grâce au lostship, vaisseau surpuissant ayant traversé les âges grâce à une technologie inconnue, l'affrontement se fera de plus en plus rude.

Mais le fait que le Nightmare ait lui aussi pu s'approprier 3 lostships risque de changer le rapport de forces avec Kain. Par ailleurs, qui est donc ce StarGazer et quelles sont ses relations avec la défunte grand-mère de Kain ? L'univers est-il en danger de tomber dans l'escarcelle du Nightmare ?
