其实这部电影讲了两个故事。一是17世纪末，一个英国木匠为海军试制高精度时钟的故事。二是第一次世界大战期间，英国一名负伤退役的海军中校试图修复木匠的那些时钟的故事。这两个相距近300年的不同时空里的故事，在电影里用两条线索交替讲述着，将观众带入历史，带入对人和世界的思考之中。
首先有必要说一下时钟和经度的关系。我们知道，15世纪末期开始，人类进入地理大发现的时代。西班牙和葡萄牙船队一次次的远航，发现了一个又一个新大陆，他们给那里带去了大规模的屠杀，同时带回来无数的黄金和奴隶。随后，英国海盗，以及挂着海盗旗的英国海军，大肆劫掠西、葡两国运送金银的船只。这些黄金成为这些欧洲国家资本主义原始积累的第一桶金。
1584年，英格兰伊丽莎白女王向海盗将军德雷克下达了率舰攻击西印度群岛的西班牙舰队的命令，标志着海上军事斗争在全球范围展开。这个时候，远洋舰船精确定位及导航问题的重要性凸现出来。为此，英格兰女王颁布女王法案，用巨额赏金征求这一问题的解决方案。
在电影中可以看到，赏金吸引了大量的形形色色的人，他们提出了各式各样的方案，但都很难通过严格的测试。当时的数学和天文学知识，已经使人们可以通过天文观测，比如月球在恒星间的位置，将观测结果和标准时间比较，进而计算出观测点的经度。但要想使舰船上的计算结果足够精确，船上就必须掌握足够精确的时间。于是一个木匠按这个思路，毕其一生，专心研究时钟，取得了相当的成就。他的工作为英国取得海上霸主的地位发挥了重大作用，也为“日不落帝国”的诞生打下了基础。
我们也知道，早在古希腊，就有人发明了经纬网的概念，后来许多国家的人们都希望将经度开始的地方据为己有，于是零度经线（本初子午线）一度有了多个版本，例如穿过罗马、哥本哈根、圣彼得堡、北京和费城的本初子午线。直到1884年，在美国华盛顿召开的第一届国际子午线会议，采纳了以英国格林威治天文台所在经线为本初子午线的建议。英国能够最终赢得这条荣耀的经线，是由于大英帝国当时在世界上的政治地位和科学地位。
说到这里，我们明白了，这部关于时钟的电影，为什么用“经度”来命名。记得上世纪80年代有一部苏联电影《命令》，讲的是军事演习的故事，其中的插曲唱道：“我们用天文时间指路……”。
为什么用时间而不是指北针指路？当时小小的我没能想明白，所以一直记得这句歌词。
这部电影实际上并没有讲述多少科学知识， 是因为其中展示了各个层次、各种各样的人物，其中有国王、大臣、贵族、科学家、贫民以及经常处于生死边缘的水手，在他们身上表现了人性的真善美和假恶丑的方方面面。影片的细节很多，下面简单说说。
那个出身贫寒的木匠，以及他的儿子，在几十年的时间里，为了赢得女王法案的奖金，经过大量艰苦的工作和实验，先后试制出3台高精度摆钟。在这个过程中，他们积累了广博的知识和精湛的手艺，取得了当时首屈一指的成绩。但是，巨额的奖金引发的就不会仅仅是单纯的技术问题了，人类社会和人性的复杂这时充分表现了出来。
在海上试验和竞争中，木匠不但要经历艰苦的航海生活，还要忍受贵族的盛气凌人以及当权者的弄虚作假。尽管如此，第一次海上试验的优异成绩还是无法被人完全抹杀的，木匠赢得了继续研究的经费。当时，水手是非常低等和危险的职业。水手们把木匠的工作看作自己的生命所系，他们的热情支持也成为木匠工作的动力。
当木匠完成第二台大型摆钟的时候，已经老了，不能承受海上生活，只好将试验工作交给他的年轻的儿子。在富丽堂皇的宫殿，仆人引导小木匠来到海军部长面前的时候，年过半百的部长正和3名裸体的美貌女郎围着一张桌子玩扑克。可以想像这个场景里小木匠内心受到的冲击（影片最后交待，多年以后，小木匠拿到大部兑现的女王奖金之后才结婚）。小木匠尽力平静地提出远航美洲进行试验的要求，而部长不但给予了他全力支持，而且表现出对他这个小人物足够的尊重。这位政治家，一边是骄奢淫逸的生活，一边又有超越个人的对国家利益阐精竭虑的追求。
很快，庞大笨重的摆钟运上了军舰，小木匠出发了。在一个港口，两名水手私自把一些酒倒卖给了别人。然后，这两个水手被抓了起来，按军纪处以最严厉的鞭刑，同时全体船员集合在甲板观看行刑。这情景过于血腥，以至于小木匠不忍目睹，把头扭向一边。这时，旁边的舰长大吼：“把头转过来。根据法律，你必须看，否则你将和他们一起受刑。”那时，担任军官的人一般都是贵族出身。我看到这里，以为电影想表现的是等级矛盾和残酷刑罚。
其实问题的关键是酒。因为淡水存储时间长了就会腐败发臭，那些低度酒实际上相当于饮用水。果然，在茫茫大洋上，水手们无法喝下变质发臭的水，绝望和疯狂暴躁的情绪开始寻找爆发口。小木匠只能在一边看着。这时，舰长走了进来，端起一大杯水，一饮而尽，然后宣布“这水没有问题”。舰长表现出严峻形势下的高度责任感，迅速稳定了局面。小木匠的摆钟这时也发挥了作用，准确的定位，及时改变航向并找到陆地，挽救了一船人。
这次远航充分证实了木匠的成就，但是权贵们仍然从中作梗，使女王法案无法兑现。其中，大英帝国的首席天文学家都可以冷酷无情地玩弄权术、颠倒黑白。不过影片没有脸谱化，在一个剧烈冲突的情景中让他流露出一丝人类基本的同情心。
正直的皇家学院也反感这明显的不公，于是给老木匠授勋，以作为补偿。但老木匠没有满足，甚至对勋章感到受之有愧。因为一个难题困扰着他，他无法消除舰载火炮射击的后座力和舰船转向的离心力对摆钟精度的影响。
一名海军上尉来看望老木匠，向他讲述因为导航问题而损失的生命，以及许许多多下层水手、军官们对他和他的时钟的期望。老木匠很感动，但他几乎没有了信心，他说：“一个人年轻的时候，会以为自己无所不能，但等他老了，就会发现事情不是这样。”海军上尉立即回答：“那就不要变老。”
但是，如何才能不变老呢？看到这里，观众在心里一定会和老木匠一样发出疑问。年轻的心、青春的激情就一定要随着时间一同流逝吗？
老木匠的这个问题，其实和哈姆雷特的那个经典问题 生存还是毁灭 一样，在每个时代，包括今天，都有无数的人遇到过。也许，在理想和现实之间，很多时候是无法找到最优决策点的。定下决心去做，结局如何就看运气了。
老木匠坚持了下来，在他的有生之年，将庞大的摆钟改造成碗碟大小的机械钟，这是一个新的高度。
在第二个故事里，海军中校在博物馆偶然发现了300年前的那3座时钟，并决心修复它们。中校是如此执著于这项工作，以至于毁了自己的身体和生活。他的妻子也无法忍受，同他离了婚。这个故事的主题，是天才偏执的行为和孤独的内心。
