This is an exposition of the social and political history of renaissance Florentine history, told through dramatized conversations between the main participants, Cosimo de Medici and Brunelleschi.

A series of murders is committed in Nice on the French riviera. The commissaire Carella is in charge and tries to find a missing link between all these murders.

The film consists of twelve episodes, all with Monica Vitti as the protagonist.
