《江湖行》是现代著名作家徐讦的代表作，文学成就颇高。1973年，这一名著被擅长现代拳脚片的张曾泽（代表作为《路客与刀客》）搬上银幕，故事被大刀阔斧的删繁就简，只保留野壮子（李修贤饰）与长辈舵伯（谷峰饰）的恩怨，以及与名伶葛衣情（何莉莉饰）的恩怨。亦因如此，短短80分钟的影片虽然显得非常紧凑，但野壮子踏入江湖的情感失落只有对葛衣情的负心薄幸有细致的刻画，其余未能细致的展开，显然不及原著来得震撼人心。不过，影片结尾李修贤与谷峰的一场你死我活的打斗戏倒相当精彩，而它的动作设计则是当时还未成名的袁和平（字幕打的是“袁大眼”）和袁祥仁兄弟。
对于李修贤而言，《江湖行》是他最早担纲主演并且引起轰动的作品。当时他刚刚20岁，却已经被张彻领入行三年了。《江湖行》中的男主角由幼稚到反省的心理路程对于一个毛头小子实在有难度，所幸李修贤不负众望，表演出色获得好评，看来日后获得香港金像、台湾金马双料影帝绝非侥幸。
