The unassuming Ma Wei once served as a cavalry company commander in the People's Liberation Army 4th Division. Back then, mounted on a magnificent steed and clad in a crisp uniform, he cut an incredibly dashing figure. However, the wave of massive military downsizing swept away the cavalry units—deemed obsolete for modern warfare—and Ma Wei saw his world come crashing down. Filled with a sense of grievance, he led his squad of subordinates to join his cousin, who was making his way in Guangzhou—only to discover he was arrested for arms dealing. Penniless and desperate, Ma Wei and his men head south toward Hong Kong, enduring cold treatment and bullying while struggling to survive.
